A Message from Mayor Billy Kenoi
The thoughts and prayers of the people of the County of Hawai’i go out to our friends and family in Japan and especially to those who lost loved ones in the March 11th Tohoku earthquake and tsunami and continue to suffer greatly.
Some of our West Hawai’i residents experienced the loss of property, but thankfully, no lives were lost.
I am proud the residents of our County reacted in an admirable fashion and treated this threat seriously. Through our own history, we know too well the dangers of a tsunami.
I cannot emphasize enough my heartfelt gratitude to Civil Defense Director Quince Mento and all County of Hawai’i employees who stepped up once again, to ensure the safety of our islands residents and visitors.
We continue to work closely with state and federal agencies to monitor the situation in Japan and continue to assist our own residents who were affected.
As always, we warmly welcome all who are planning a visit to our beautiful Big Island.
